KMSC F.A.Q.

Q: What is KMSC?

A: KMSC is a Class D FM radio station licensed to Morningside College.

Q: So what?

A: KMSC is the ONLY college radio station in Siouxland.

Q: What’s the big deal about college radio?

A: College radio is by far the coolest thing on the air. It is all about the music, not the hype, the multi-million dollar record company promotions, or the glitz of corporate music. It’s about the good stuff. Student radio has a history of being ahead of the musical curve. You’ll hear it on KMSC well before you hear it on any of the other station in this market.

Q: You guys screw up on the air sometimes. What’s up with that?

A: Hey, we’re students. We’re learning. Give us a break.

Q: What’s KMSC’s format?

A: We call it “college alternative”, it’s the best non-corporate music we know.

Q: KMSC sometimes sounds really different at night and on the weekends than it does during weekdays. Why don’t you keep the same format all the time?

A: Evenings and weekends are set aside for what we call “specialty programs”. We think there’s lots of great music that doesn’t fit into our “college alternative” category. We want to make a place for the other stuff too. We think non-corporate Rap, R&B, World Music, Latin, Christian, Metal, and other genres deserve some airtime too.

Q: I don’t like your music.

A: Don’t listen. Or keep listening. You might hear something you do like.

Q: Who’s responsible for what I hear on KMSC?

A: In a sense, everybody involved in the station. That’s what college radio is all about.

Q: Yeah, but I heard something on KMSC that really @#$%^ed me off. To whom to I complain?

A: Dr. Mark Heistad is the station general manager and faculty advisor. He can be reached at 274-5299. Complain to him about anything except the music (he doesn’t much like the music we play, but then he’s an old guy).

Q: Why is your signal so weak?

A: Blame the Federal Communications Commission. We’d like to upgrade our signal, but they’re not accepting applications for that now. Rest assured that we’re working on it. In the meantime, you can listen to us on the net at http://kmsc.morningside.edu/. Just click on the “Listen Live” button, and then select one of the streams.
